A Pretty Muddy DEAL!

4

Remember back in November when I told you that the Pretty Muddy Was Pretty Awesome? It was my very first mud run. Even now when I think about it, I remember how fun it was and how I can’t wait to do it again. It’s already on my list of events for this year and is one of my #10in2013 that I want to complete.

Well, now is your chance to register for this FUN event and join me!! You say you’ve never done a mud run before? Don’t worry, this is a great one to start with. The Pretty Muddy team really is pretty awesome at setting up fun obstacles that make you feel super empowered when you do it. I was really afraid of climbing the social network wall and swore I wouldn’t do it. When we got to it, I decided I was there, I was going to do it. And I did. I DID IT! If there are any obstacles that you do not feel comfortable with or can’t do, have no fear, you can go around. And it’s all good… The important thing is to have fun. Oh and to get crazy muddy. And have fun with your girl friends. It’s definitely a girl power kind of day. I can’t even put into words how fun it was. Here are a few pictures from that day….

2013 RACES JUSTWATCHMEpng

Looking back at 2012, it was my first year of “official” races. I was hooked after my first one. As of the end of the year, I did a total of six races. Had I not been injured or sick, I would have completed ten. My goal for 2013 is to complete TEN races, three of them being half-marathons.

When I registered for the Rock N’ Roll Half last January, just weeks before the event, I thought I was nuts. That event alone proved to me how strong I really am. And when I did the Women’s Half in November, I was afraid I would not enjoy it as much as the first one. I could not have been more wrong. That one was harder – both mentally and physically – but again I was reminded that I can do anything I set my mind to. The minute I crossed the finish line, I was already thinking about the next one.

Hubby thinks I am obsessed with races and he’s probably right. If you’ve never done one, it’s hard to explain the feelings and excitement that go along with it. I don’t do it for the t-shirt or the medals, even though I LOVE the medals and proudly display them. I do it for ME. To prove to myself that I can do it. To push myself a little harder and a little farther than I normally do. To be a part of something big. It’s a rush, no doubt about it.

These are the races I am already signed up for this year:

  • 01/12/13 – Glow Run 5K, St. Petersburg, FL
  • 02/02/13 – Best Damn Race 5K, Safety Harbor, FL
  • 02/10/13 – Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon, St. Petersburg, FL
  • 02/24/13 – Gasparilla Distance Classic 8K, Tampa, FL
  • 04/14/13 – Iron Girl Half Marathon, Clearwater, FL

Of all of these, I am most excited about the Rock N’ Roll Half. It will forever hold a place in my heart as the first half-marathon I ever did and was a true indicator of what races meant for me.

I am also afraid of one- the Iron Girl Half Marathon. It goes over the bridge to Clearwater Beach and that will seriously mess with my time. But I am up for the challenge.

These are the races for the fall that I want to do but I am not yet signed up for them:

  • 11/24/13 – Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon, St. Petersburg, FL
  • 11/30/13 – Pretty Muddy Mud Run 5K, Tampa, FL
  • 11/28/13 – Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot, Clearwater, FL
  • TBD – The Color Run, St. Petersburg, FL

That’s 9 races. I need one more!! Which one should I do? I would like it to be a timed 5K event.

I am so excited for 2013 and for facing challenges that come my way. JUST WATCH ME!

How many races do you plan to do in 2013? What should my 10th race be?

happy new year 2013

As 2012 comes to an end tonight and we welcome 2013, I am thinking about this year and all the things I accomplished. 2012 has definitely been the year of stepping outside of my comfort zone. I’ve done so many things that I normally would not do. I hope that I continue to face my fears head-on in 2013.

To finish out the year, I thought I’d do a list of my favorite posts of the year. This was really tough to narrow down and I’m probably forgetting something, but these posts meant the most to me. From completing not one but TWO half-marathons, meeting the wonderful women of Tampa Bay Lady Bloggers, my first blog conference, becoming Yelp Elite, starting Jingle Bikes For Kids, wonderful family time, along with several struggles I faced - it’s been a memorable year.  I hope you enjoy this look back with me…

I love my blog and I really look forward to continuing to blog in 2013 and to see how it grows. I would like to thank each and every one of you for following and showing interest in my babbling. It helps to keep me sane.

Wishing you all a SAFE and Happy New Year!!

Who wants to get DIRTY?

After finishing my first mud run last month, the Pretty Muddy Mud Run, I was hooked. When I was then contacted by the fine folks at Dirty Girl Mud Run to take part in their mud run coming up in February, I was in. Then I got sick and failed to do my blogging duties in time, but I wanted to share all the details with you all…

What a delightfully dirty day.

Run, walk, climb, crawl—you will experience it all. With obstacle names like H2OMG and PMS (Pretty Muddy Stuff), you can expect to laugh until your cheeks hurt. But don’t worry, if you get to an obstacle that’s more than a challenge for you—hey, take one of the detours. Also expect safety throughout. Expect the competition to go on rain or shine. Expect not to be timed. Expect some crazy team uniforms. Expect to leave with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment

Let me know if you’re doing to be a Dirty Girl in Tampa! I am not sure if I’ll be participating, only because it’s the day before the Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon, but I guarantee you it will be a great time and the location is beautiful!

Pretty Muddy was Pretty Awesome!!

Yesterday was THE day I have been waiting for, the day I was finally going to get muddy. Pretty Muddy to be exact. It was such a great day! Where do I start? Can you tell I was excited to go?

Hubby tagged along with me so he could take photos and of course I was thankful for the company on the 62 mile drive from our house out to Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City. We arrived at the ranch about 9:30 am and my wave wasn’t until 11, so I had plenty of time to check-in, take some pictures, and look around at all the fun that was happening. Little Everglades Ranch is a working ranch, a little over 2000 acres, and is beautiful!

As we were checking out the finish line, we saw my friend Steph from Kitchen Kilometers (a fellow Tampa Bay Lady Blogger) coming in. She looked like she was having so much fun, it was great to see her finish and she gave me a little sneak peek of the what I had to look forward to.

I also ran into Courtney, who blogs over at Journey of a Dreamer and originally contacted me about this event and the blogging opportunity. She flew in from Missouri for this event, but actually grew up here in Clearwater. This would be her second Pretty Muddy event. She did such a great job keeping in touch with all of us bloggers. It was great to meet her. She also introduced me to Kevin, the founder of Pretty Muddy, and his wife. Thanks for everything Courtney and Kevin!

My friend Corinna arrived, along with her kids Nicole and John, and her cousin Karen, and her aunt. Corinna, Nicole, and Karen, and I would be in the 11am wave. There was much excitement waiting to start and seeing the waves before us start. Finally it was our turn to head to the start line. We were ready to get MUDDY!

When we left the finish line, our first obstacle was to run through BUBBLES!! Hubby was able to get some great shots of these before we headed off to the rest of the course.

I so wish I had a camera with me on the course… I would have loved to get pictures of the different obstacles, which consisted of the following, some of which I remember the clever names for.

  • Running through ICE COLD water, about mid-calf on me…
  • Our first mud pit (where one of the girls in front of us lost her shoe!) and then running through a beautiful barn.
  • Wood You Rather…. Pick up a fence post and run with it over your head around a tree and then put it back.
  • A slide!! This was probably my favorite obstacle. Climb up one side then slide down the other while it’s being hosed down and then crawl through a mud pit to get out.
  • Pretty Tubular…. A set of tubes to crawl through, with mud in the bottom, of course!
  • The big cargo net… This is the one I was afraid of and thought for sure I would not be able to do. Besides being afraid of heights, I also had visions of twisting my ankle. When I got up to it, I decided I was there, I was going to do it. And I did! Climbing up wasn’t too bad, until I got to the top. I couldn’t figure out how to get over the top and turn around at the same time to climb back down. Thanks to the spotter that was there, he told me how to do it and I safely made it to the bottom. And thanks to Corinna and Karen for cheering me on! This picture is not of the cargo net from yesterday, I borrowed it from the Pretty Muddy site to show you my accomplishment. I am so proud of myself!

  • Over and Out… This consisted of low walls in little mud pits. The first one you climb over, the second one you crawl under (and get muddy in the process!), and the third one you climb over.
  • Beach Balls! Run through beach balls and kick them at each other at the same time.
  • More cargo nets to walk through (I had visions of running through this quickly, HA!) and then a low cargo net to crawl under in mud.
  • Soooo Over It… more walls to climb over, these were a little taller.

After that, we rounded the course uphill towards the finish line and hubby was there waiting with the camera.

And then it was time for the last obstacle, the muddiest mud pit of all. I loved the name of this one and couldn’t wait to dive in and crawl through it (despite the no diving sign….).

We did it! 3.11 miles, completed all obstacles, got muddy, and had a fantastic time! After our exciting finish, we had fun taking more photos, and there was the obligatory free beer at the finish line. That was refreshing!

After hosing off all the mud and changing into clean, dry clothes, it was time to head home. I was so excited to have completed it and enjoyed every single minute of it. I can’t wait to do it again next year. Who wants to join me for Pretty Muddy 2013?
