Happy Wednesday everyone! This week, I am featuring a runner who I think is amazing. She is one of the fabulous gals behind the #GoalGetter2013 challenge I take part in. Currently training for a full marathon and battling an injury is not easy, but she is very determined. More than once, I have mentioned to her that we run at a similar pace (sometimes!) and it would be awesome to have the chance to run with her one day. Time to meet Abby…
When did you start running? I decided to take my roommate’s dog for a run. Neither of us made it past the mailbox. It was scary- Something I thought I would be able to do was so hard. I knew I was overweight and unhappy with my body. However, I never realized how out of shape I was until that moment and suddenly I knew I needed to do something about it. If I didn’t I was sure I would continue to gain weight, stay out of shape, and just get unhealthier. It was time for a change.
Who or what inspires you to run? That oh crap, time to wake up, moment happened about 5 years ago, but in truth it never really stuck. I would run a few days and then quit for months at a time. Then try to start again and be frustrated because it was so hard. Almost three years ago I started to get more serious about it. However, I really began considering myself a runner on October 1st, 2010. That is the day a friend and I started half marathon training. I made a promise to myself that I was going to commit to: I was going to become a runner, I was going to finish the race, I wasn’t going to let my friend down, and I wasn’t going to let myself down. Ever since then I haven’t stopped. Running is now truly a part of who I am. Seeing myself grow and progress from race to race inspires me to keep going and see what I am capable of.
What is your favorite running mantra? Too hard to choose just one:
“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” John Bingham
“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.” Vince Lombardi
“If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.” John Bingham
What is your favorite running or fitness blog? There are too many to name. However, I tend to mostly read blogs by normal runners like me. Women who have full time jobs, struggles, and still try to make it work. They inspire me more than the elites.
What is the first race you ever ran? I walked a few 5Ks with my sorority sisters in college, but the first race that I actually ran was a half marathon.
Name one thing you learned from your first race? You are capable of so much more than you think!
What are you currently training for? Marine Corp Marathon in Oct. Rock ‘n Roll New Orleans Marathon in Feb. and 4 half marathons in between.
What one piece of running gear you cannot live without? Good shoes! I love my Mizuno Wave Creations!
Share one piece of advice to new runners… Start off slow, create a schedule, and try your hardest to stick to it.
And for fun… What do you like to do besides run? Right now I am gearing up for football season. Sunday morning workouts followed by NFL football – Go Colts!
Be sure to follow Abby here…
Feel free to leave any questions or comments here for Abby, or wish her good luck for her upcoming marathon!
